Key takeaways
- The owner of a UAE free zone company usually gets residency through the investor visa that the free zone issues on the company's licence; SHAMS, for example, lists investor visas in its cost calculator and says no local partner is required.
- A UAE free zone investor visa is a sponsored residence visa, and sponsored UAE residence visas run for 1, 2 or 3 years (as of October 2026, per u.ae); the exact term depends on the free zone and the package you choose.
- The long-term alternative is Golden Residency, which lasts 10 years with no sponsor, but investors generally need AED 2,000,000 in capital, a property of that value, or a stake in a company that pays at least AED 250,000 a year in federal taxes.
- Every adult residence visa applicant must pass a medical fitness test and a security check and then apply for an Emirates ID; Emirates ID for residents costs AED 100 per year of validity plus a AED 100 Smart Service fee (ICP, checked October 2026).
- A UAE residence visa is cancelled automatically after more than 180 continuous days outside the country, although u.ae says investors holding valid residence visas are exempt from that rule; confirm your own status with your free zone before relying on it.
Which visa route does a free zone company owner use?
A free zone owner has three realistic routes: the free zone's investor (or partner) visa, ICP Green Residence for investors and business partners, or Golden Residency. The first is the default because it comes with the licence and needs no minimum investment beyond what the free zone requires.
| Route | Who issues it | Validity | Headline condition | Sponsor needed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free zone investor or partner visa | Free zone, processed through ICP | 1, 2 or 3 years (sponsored visa terms) | Valid licence; free zone rules and package | Yes, the company |
| Green Residence (investor or partner) | ICP | 5 years | Proof of investment in a UAE venture plus licences and approvals; ICP's service page lists a AED 1,000,000 contribution, while its guide page states no threshold, so confirm before applying | No |
| Golden Residency (investor) | ICP | 10 years | AED 2,000,000 in capital or property, or a company paying at least AED 250,000 a year in federal taxes | No |
| Golden Residency (entrepreneur) | ICP | 10 years | Owning an approved SME with annual revenue of at least AED 1,000,000, or an approved business idea | No |

Who is eligible for a free zone investor visa?
You're eligible if you're a shareholder or owner of a licensed free zone company and the free zone allows you to hold an investor visa on that licence. You don't need to be a UAE resident to set the company up, and a SHAMS company, for instance, doesn't require a local partner or a NOC from an existing sponsor.
Two practical limits apply. First, free zones cap visas per licence: SHAMS states up to 50 visas per licence, depending on the business's needs and structure. Second, the visa has to sit inside that cap, so an owner visa and employee visas compete for the same allocation in some packages; ask your free zone how it counts them.
If you already hold a UAE residence visa under another sponsor, SHAMS says you can use it to incorporate. The change to your own company's sponsorship is a separate step and, per the SHAMS cost calculator, a change of status is only available while you are inside the UAE.
How do you apply for the owner visa, step by step?
The process is the same in outline everywhere: licence first, then entry permit or status change, then medical test, then Emirates ID and the visa stamp. The free zone's portal and ICP handle the filing; the order matters because each step depends on the one before it.
- Get the licence and company documents in place. The free zone issues the trade licence; the SHAMS cost calculator also lists an immigration card among the items needed for visas.
- Choose the visa and package. In the SHAMS calculator you enter investor visas and employee visas separately, so pick the owner visa when you build the quote.
- Obtain an entry permit or a status change. If you're outside the UAE, the free zone applies for an entry permit and you enter on it; if you're already inside on a visit visa or another residence, a status change is filed instead. The SHAMS site notes that change of status applies only when the person is in the country.
- Take the medical fitness test. Applicants aged 18 and over must prove medical fitness (u.ae). SHAMS says medical costs are paid directly to the medical centre.
- Apply for the Emirates ID. Fingerprint and signature procedures are done at an ICP service centre for applicants aged 15 and over; standard processing is 5 days and the card is delivered by courier (ICP).
- Receive the residence visa. Once the medical, security check and Emirates ID are complete, the visa is issued on the company's sponsorship.
What does the owner visa cost?
The government charges are small; the free zone's package fees are the bulk of the cost and vary by zone. The only fee tied to a published figure here is the Emirates ID: for residents it is AED 100 per year of residence plus a AED 100 Smart Service fee, and an urgent service is AED 150, available only at service centres (ICP, checked October 2026).
| Cost item | Amount | Source and note |
|---|---|---|
| Emirates ID (resident) | AED 100 per year of validity + AED 100 Smart Service fee | ICP, October 2026 |
| Urgent Emirates ID | AED 150 | ICP; service centres only |
| Medical fitness test | Paid to the medical centre | Amount not published by SHAMS or ICP; check with the centre |
| Investor visa fee | Not published | SHAMS shows AED 0 until you enter inputs in its calculator; get a written quote |
| Overstay fine | AED 50 per day | u.ae, October 2026 |
Anyone quoting you an "all in" owner visa price should break it into government fees, free zone fees and any service charge. Qawi doesn't publish a visa price list here because the free zone sets most of the fee, so ask for the quote in writing.
Does health insurance apply to a free zone owner?
Health insurance is mandatory for the Golden Residency categories: ICP says the applicant and family members need valid health insurance, and u.ae lists "medical insurance or health card" among residence visa documents. Whether your emirate or free zone requires a specific policy for a standard investor visa varies, and the sources reviewed did not give a single rule, so confirm with your free zone.
When should you choose Golden or Green Residence instead?
Choose Golden Residency if you can meet the capital, property or tax threshold and want ten years without tying your residence to the company. Choose the free zone visa if you want the cheapest, fastest route and your residence is only needed while the company operates.
The trade-off is control. A free zone visa is sponsored by the company, so if the company is closed or the licence lapses, your visa goes with it. Golden Residency needs no sponsor and renews automatically, but the investor must keep meeting the conditions and must document the source of the invested capital, which ICP says must be fully owned and not borrowed.
If you don't meet a Golden threshold, the Green Residence investor category (five years, no sponsor) may fit. Because ICP's own pages disagree on whether a minimum investment applies, ask ICP or your free zone to confirm the condition for your case before you pay for an application.

What most guides don't tell you
- Your visa follows the company, not you. On a free zone investor visa the company is the sponsor, so cancelling the licence or failing to renew it cancels the visa. If you also have dependents on your visa, u.ae says you must cancel their visas before your own.
- Time abroad can cost you the visa. More than 180 continuous days outside the UAE cancels a residence visa automatically. The u.ae page says investors holding valid residence visas are exempt, but the wording is short; if you spend long periods overseas, get the free zone to confirm in writing how it applies to your visa.
- Holding the visa is not the end of onboarding. The visa and the company's bank account are separate approvals, so having one doesn't guarantee the other. Plan the bank application alongside the visa rather than after it.
- Quotas and bundled visas change the price. SHAMS states up to 50 visas per licence, but how many come with the base licence isn't stated on its site. Ask what is included before comparing quotes.
If you'd rather not track visa renewals, Emirates ID expiry and licence dates by hand, the UAE compliance calendar is a free calendar of your company's UAE tax and compliance deadlines, personalised from a few questions, as a PDF and calendar file.
Which deadlines apply to your company?
Visa, licence, tax and audit dates stack up quickly once you have staff. The free UAE compliance calendar lists them for your company, personalised from a few questions, as a PDF and calendar file.
Frequently asked questions
Can a shareholder hold a partner or investor visa and also work in the company?
Yes, in most cases an owner can run their own company, but the rules on owner-managers differ by free zone. Ask your free zone to confirm in writing whether an employment permit is needed on top of the investor visa.
What is a labour card and is it still used?
This post couldn't verify the current position on labour cards from an official source. Ask MOHRE, or your free zone for free zone staff, which work permit document applies to employees today.
How do I renew employee visas in bulk?
Employee visas are renewed with the authority behind the sponsorship, which for a free zone company is the free zone, and u.ae says the sponsor must renew before expiry. Whether your zone lets you batch renewals is set by its portal, so ask it.
Do I need health insurance for my employees in Dubai?
Health insurance rules differ by emirate and free zone, and this post couldn't verify the current Dubai requirement from an official source. Check with the Dubai Health Authority or your free zone before you hire.
Can I get an investor visa through my company?
Yes. A licensed free zone company can sponsor an investor visa for its owner, subject to the free zone's rules and visa allocation. A Golden Residency is an alternative if you meet the AED 2,000,000 or tax thresholds.
