Key takeaways
- A UAE flexi desk can support residence visas in free zones that sell it as a package, but the number of visas depends on each free zone's quota rules, not on the desk itself.
- DMCC states that a flexi desk allows up to 3 visas, a serviced office 4 or 5, and physical space 1 visa for every 9 square metres (checked 6 October 2026).
- Meydan Free Zone says a flexi desk meets the address requirement for visa issuance and renewal, and SHAMS describes its licences as carrying 0 to 6 visas depending on package and entity.
- A mainland company registered with MOHRE is handled differently: Cabinet Resolution No. 203 of 2022 gives a new establishment a quota of 3 electronic work permits, or 6 or 20 for listed and high priority activities.
- Before paying for any free zone package, get the visa allocation for that exact package in writing, because published pages often leave the number out.
What is a flexi desk, and does it come with visas?
A flexi desk is a shared workstation with a registered business address, sold as part of a free zone licence package. Visas are a separate allowance: the desk gives you an address, and the free zone's quota rules decide how many residence visas that address can sponsor.
IFZA describes its flexi desk as a shared workstation with 10 hours of access per week, an IFZA address and one hour of complimentary meeting room use per month (page updated 22 May 2026). The same IFZA page says free zones may still tie visa quotas to office size, and it gives no flexi desk visa figure. Meydan's site says its licence package includes a flexi desk that provides a registered address and shared workspace access for licensing and visa purposes.
How many visas does a flexi desk allow in each free zone?
The allowance differs by free zone, and some free zones publish no number at all. Among the free zones checked on 6 October 2026, DMCC is the only one that published a flexi desk figure on the pages reviewed.

What changes if you are on the mainland instead?
A mainland company's work permit quota comes from MOHRE's classification rules, not from a free zone's office-size formula. Cabinet Resolution No. 203 of 2022 grants a new establishment an electronic work permit quota of 3 employees, 6 employees for activities listed in its second annexure, and 20 employees for high priority sectors.
Existing establishments receive electronic work permits equal to 5 to 10 per cent of their registered workforce, up to 100 employees, under the same resolution. Free zone companies generally apply for work permits and residence visas through their own free zone authority instead, according to u.ae.
How do you get visas on a flexi desk?
The process runs through your free zone, and the quota is checked before any application proceeds. The usual order is:
- Confirm in writing the number of visas your package carries and the price of upgrading it.
- Complete licence issuance and the free zone's establishment registration.
- Apply for the entry permit or status change through the free zone authority's portal or its visa team.
- Complete the medical test and Emirates ID biometrics.
- Collect the residence visa and Emirates ID once the free zone confirms issuance.
DMCC lists its employment visa documents in two stages: passport copy with 6 to 8 months of validity, a passport photo, an attested educational certificate and a signed offer letter, then a medical fitness certificate and health insurance. Other free zones set their own lists, so ask for yours.

What most guides don't tell you
A published visa figure may belong to a different package. SHAMS describes 0 to 6 visas depending on package and entity, so a quote that says "visas included" without a number is not a commitment; ask for the quota as a line item in the package.
A visa quota is not a bank account approval. Free zones set the quota; banks run their own checks on premises and activity, and we have not verified any bank's policy on flexi desks. Ask your bank before you build a hiring plan on a shared desk.
Upgrading later can cost more than choosing the right package first. DMCC ties visas to workspace type, and u.ae says free zone companies can raise a quota by moving to a bigger office or applying for an increase; if you expect to hire more than 3 people in the first year, price a serviced office against a flexi desk plus upgrade before you sign.
Which deadlines apply to your company?
Your visa renewals, licence renewal and tax filings each run on their own dates. The free UAE compliance calendar lists them for your company.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a physical office for a UAE trade licence?
It depends on the licence type and the authority: many free zones issue licences on a flexi desk, while a standard mainland licence is usually tied to a leased location. Ask the licensing authority which premises your exact activity needs.
What is Ejari and when do I need it?
Ejari is the Dubai Land Department system for registering tenancy contracts in Dubai. A Dubai mainland office lease is normally registered through it, while SHAMS, for example, lists a lease agreement in its flexi desk packages, so ask your free zone whether any separate registration applies.
How many visas can I get with a free zone licence?
It depends on the free zone and the package. DMCC allows up to 3 visas on a flexi desk, and SHAMS describes its licences as carrying 0 to 6 visas depending on package and entity.
What is the visa quota and how is it calculated?
A visa quota is the number of residence visas a company may sponsor, and free zones commonly set it by workspace type. DMCC, for example, uses up to 3 visas for a flexi desk, 4 or 5 for a serviced office, and 1 visa for every 9 square metres of physical space.
